Writing Stipend - Write with Sophie Gips

OPEN CALL - WRITE WITH SOPHIE GIPS

Sammlung Hoffmann is a private art collection featuring works from the 1920s to the 2010s. Since 1997, it has been displayed in the living and working spaces of Erika and Corinna Hoffmann in Berlin. Each year, a new presentation places artworks in dialogue with current social topics, highlighting different aspects of the collection.

In 2026, Sammlung Hoffmann awarded the stipend TIME WITH SOPHIE GIPS for the first time. It enables three artists to develop new works in response to the current presentation "okay chaos" at Sammlung Hoffmann. We are now inviting applications for the newly established stipend WRITE WITH SOPHIE GIPS.

Who can apply?

We are offering a stipend to a young writer who will develop their own texts based on conversations with this year's three artist stipend recipients. The open call is aimed at writers at the beginning of their professional careers, particularly in the fields of creative writing, art criticism, cultural studies, or related disciplines. An interest in writing about art and in collaboratively developing a publication format is essential. A specific academic degree or extensive professional experience is not required.

The conversations with the artists will be held in German and English, so excellent proficiency in both languages is required. The texts may be written in either language.

What do we offer?

The writing period can be scheduled flexibly between January 4 and April 18, 2027. By the end of the stipend period, you will have completed: texts of 6,000–8,000 characters per artist, each based in part on conversations with one of the three artists; final versions of all texts, ready for publication; editorial work towards the completion of the publication.

Regular in-person meetings and conversations with the three artists in Berlin are part of the stipend. The writer does not have to be based in Berlin; however, travel expenses cannot be reimbursed. For the duration of the stipend, a work desk at Sammlung Hoffmann can be made available two days per week. You are also welcome to use the library.

Application Materials

Please send the following by November 8, 2026: a short letter of motivation, a short CV, two to three writing samples from one of the fields mentioned above, published or unpublished, each no longer than one A4 page.
